About Alex
I'm Alex Paterson, an voluntary sector professional with extensive experience in infant mental health, family support, LGBTQ+ parenting communities and early years development. As an Early Years teacher and IAIM-trained Baby Massage Instructor, I'm passionate about creating inclusive, supportive spaces for all families. I am a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.Â
My Journey
My path into this work began over 15 years ago in the early years sector, where I discovered my passion for supporting families during some of their most important and vulnerable moments. Starting as a practitioner and progressing to nursery management, I witnessed firsthand how the right support at the right time can transform family experiences.
This led me to deepen my expertise through postgraduate study in infant mental health at the prestigious Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, where I gained invaluable insight into the critical early relationships that shape children's development. This academic foundation, combined with my practical experience working with children and managing services, has given me a unique perspective on both the emotional and operational aspects of family support.
My commitment to inclusive practice stems from my own experience as part of the LGBTQ+ community. I understand the importance of feeling seen, welcomed, and understood when accessing services - particularly during the vulnerable transition to parenthood. This personal insight drives my work in creating truly inclusive environments where all families can thrive.
What Drives My Work
Creating authentic connections - Whether teaching baby massage or developing strategic initiatives, I believe in the power of genuine human connection to create positive change.
Evidence-based practice - My approach is grounded in research and best practice, from attachment theory in baby massage to data-driven project management in organisational settings.
Inclusive excellence - I'm committed to ensuring that high-quality services are accessible and relevant to all families, regardless of family structure, background, or circumstances.
Collaborative leadership - Having managed teams across statutory and charitable sectors, I know that the best outcomes come from empowering others and working together towards shared goals.
Why I Set Up Moonbeam
I love having variety in my work and get a real buzz from taking on varied and interesting projects. I also set up Moonbeam, as I know from experience that taking on additional staff, can be a challenge for charities and organisations looking to run short to medium term projects. Through this freelance offer I am able to:
Step in quickly without the commitment and complexity of permanent recruitment
Bring immediate expertise to time-limited projects that need specialist knowledge in infant mental health, LGBTQ+ family support, perinatal services, and/or strategic project management
Offer cost-effective solutions for organisations with limited budgets or uncertain funding timescales
Provide the continuity and relationship-building that temporary staff often can't deliver
Work flexibly around your existing team structures and organisational culture
Whether you're a new parent seeking connection and support through baby massage, or an organisation looking to amplify your impact through better project management, I bring the same commitment to excellence, inclusion, and genuine care to every piece of work.
